7 Ways to Survive a Maine Winter

When people think of the coast of Maine, they may think of the rocky coastline, the sunrise over the Atlantic, fresh lobster rolls in the sunshine….  And maybe shoveling three feet of snow?

There are so many great ways to keep warm and jump into community life in the winter. Just in the last few weeks, we’ve enjoyed…

-          Night-time lighted ice skating (with music!) at Goddard Pond, just two blocks from the cottage;

-          “Cremapalooza”, a weekend of open-to-close live music at our wonderful local Café Crème (while enjoying locally roasted brew!);

-          A snowy sled-ride into town for a cup of cocoa during the blizzard;

-          Classic bowling just ten minutes away at Yankee Lanes in Brunswick; we managed to make it for the “rock and bowl” and shared a pitcher of affordable beer with friends;

-          A trip to the Maine Children’s Museum and Theater (only 35 minutes away in Portland), which is maybe the best possible way to entertain a few young kids for the afternoon (and one of the country's twelve best!);

-          A (free!) Friday night ice hockey game at Bowdoin College – most of their athletic events are free and open to the public; and

-          A family movie at Dreamland Theater, sponsored by the Sagadahoc Preservation Society ($5 suggested donation). Families are welcome to bring dinner to enjoy while they watch!

Winter can feel like a time to hunker down and stay by the fire – and that can be a great time too! But it’s also a really good way to enjoy the inside fun that the region can offer. After all, who wants to go inside for bowling while it’s 85 degrees and sunny in August?
