One Perfect Saturday in August
Wake up before anyone else, and take a run or a walk down to the South End of Bath, past the shipyard, the dog park, the Maritime Museum, the boat launch, the Plant Home, and be happy that you can see the river and the breeze in the marsh grasses.
Rally your family, and head down to Café Crème for bagels and coffee (cross your fingers for sun-dried-tomato-garlic cream cheese, or an avocado/egg/salsa-stuffed croissant). Try to eat outside at the bistro tables on the sidewalk, or take your goods down to waterfront park.
Spend the whole morning there. Visit the Bath Farmer’s Market. Listen to the live music. Play in the waterfall. Count the boats tied up to the dock, and try to imagine where they came from or are headed to. Stock up on fresh tomatoes, chevre with basil, a crusty loaf of bread, and a quart of wild blueberries (enough to snack on all day). Probably also a cookie.
When you’re work out from all the market fun, wander from the bottom of Front Street to the top, and finish with an early lunch at Starlight Café (the breakfast burrito is a personal favorite).
Head back to the cottage, and either nap on the porch with a book, or manage to wind your way down to Popham beach, or for a hike over Morse Mountain – but that’s strictly for the ambitious.
When you find your way back, pile those tomatoes and chevre on the bread, call it dinner, and bring it all down to the waterfront again for live music, while the kids play in the grass and the sun sets along the river.
Eat ice cream at Dot’s.
Sleep like a baby.
